Week Five...

Week Commencing 19/10/2015...

Creative Practice...

This week I have been playing with compositions and visualising my concepts. I began by creating a pin board of some of my favourite collages by other artists, which I will continue to build up throughout this project. I've found it very inspiring to see how artists' such as Eugenia Loli and Holly-Anne Buck position their existing material to create new narratives and resolved pieces. I would like to take this to the next level and make these pieces unresolved, by using the artworks within my own collage work next week.

This week, however, I wanted to feel a little more unrestricted and creative, and did this by spending some time creating two pieces for my body of creative work.

I began by creating a self-portrait collage. I'd seen that Linder had used herself within her photo-montages in She/She (2007) and wanted to see how I could put myself into the image the effect it would have.

I enjoyed posing for the photographs of myself and using them in this way, it seemed to relate to the 'selfie' culture and this led to me using a photo-frame in the piece. I wanted to cut straight through my head, in order to open up the composition. The colours were garish, and therefore I decided to put the piece through my scanner and add some effects on photoshop. The under-saturated, bleached effect of the final piece (right) is really effective and I think this is one way that working digitally enhances my resolved piece, as opposed to stunting my creativity.

To the left is a composition made up of magazine clippings and a female figure taken from a sewing pattern for a children's jumper.

I really like the way the colours I have found correlate and blend with one another, it looks like more of a resolved piece than some of my previous collages.

I came across the quote, 'princesses are great role models' in a fashion magazine interview article, and it really stood out to me - This statement embodies the first section of my research report, specifically regarding Disney princesses. Are Disney Princesses good role models?

There are arguments for and against, and it is suggested that these princesses teach young girls important values, such as being kind to the less fortunate, getting a good education and supporting family.. however, I believe that visually, they demonstrate unrealistic body image, through unnaturally small waists and limbs, and socially, well.. read the captions on the image to the right.

This piece has really assisted me to start drafting the first section of my research report.

Research Report....

My research report tutorial has been pushed back a week as I have swapped the appointment time. I am enjoying drafting my essay and am hoping to continue to do so next week.
